An impeller humidier is a type of cool mist humidifier. As such, there is no need for any of the water to be heated, a fact which contributes to one of the advantages of impeller humidifiers, their low power consumption. A typical impeller humidifier may only consume 15 to 60 watts when swithched on, although of course this is just a guideline to give you a rough idea. Any model you get may be slightly different.
How an Impeller Humidifier Works
The secret of impeller humidifiers is in their name - to impel meaning to propel or force into motion. Impeller humidifiers work by exploiting the science of centrifugal force. Inside the humifier is a disc rotating at high speed. This disc is either positioned so that part of the disc cuts into the water in the humidifier;s tank, or in some alternative setups the water is sucked up though a tube to the disc.
Whichever of these two alternatives are used, the following steps are the same. The centrifugal force created by the spinning of the disc acts upon the water to propel and scatter the water, just like a centrigfugal force funfair ride would act on the people on the ride if the safety cage wasn't there. The fine spray of water water is flung through a diffuser to create an even finer cool mist which then floats into the air in the room. Often you can actualy see the mist as it gradually emanates from the impeller humidifier.
There are no filters to buy after you've purchased your impeller humidifier. Instead it is recommended that you simply keep your unit healthy with fresh water daily and regular cleaning. If you are in an area with water which has a particularly high mineral content, often known as hard water, you may wish to use distilled water in your humidifier to cut any white dust which may be produced by your local water. Demineralization filters, cartridges or cassettes are another alternative if you have hard water.
When it comes to the question of how noisy or quiet these models are, impeller humidifiers generally make less noise than an average desk fan, so they are unlikely to cause any noise-related bother. This makes impeller humidifiers a good choice for a baby's bedroom as your little one should have no trouble sleeping. In fact impellers are ideal for any medium sized room.
